Preparing for the Portrait Session

I want your photography experience to be the most pleasant you will ever have. My photography is “painless,” and I believe you will enjoy the time we spend together. I invite you to view my website at: www.joanhefflerphotography.com to see my style of photography before you arrive for your appointment. I will take whatever time is necessary to make you comfortable, relaxed, and feeling great. All I ask is that you please be on time for your appointment!

Everything is digital and photoshop is a wonderful tool, and the photographer can remove red marks, facial blemishes, flyaway hair, perform minor plastic surgery, and more.

What to wear? How you feel about how you look can make a difference in facial expression, so I want you to feel great! Bring the clothes that do that for you and when worn, you colleagues tell you how great you look.

Can I wear a white shirt and a black suit? NO! Men look great in a light blue shirt and blue suit, and if you want to convey power, wear a tie with red in it. (Patterned ties are OK). Yellow ties are in now so consider that as well. A tie other than blue is recommended with a blue suit. Women look terrific in long sleeved maroons, greens, blues or earth tones. If you have dark hair, winter colors are best. If you are light skinned, pastels are best.

What about jewelry? Do not bring large dangly earrings or large hoops unless that is the look you want to portray to the public. Also, bring two or three different earrings and necklaces and we will choose the most appropriate. I also have scarves and pins.

Long sleeves and solid colors are best because they do not draw attention away from the face. Checks, large stripes, herringbone, little checks and loud patterns are a no-no! Choose a color that you know compliments your skin tones. If you’re not sure, think of the clothes you wear that you receive compliments on. Usually, you look good in them because their color brings out your eye color and best facial tones.

In general, bring at least two sets of changes. Men bring two different colored ties and two shirts, and women bring two different colored blouses and two jackets.

No Black: Women think they look best in black but that is usually not the case. Black washes you out! However if you must, bring black! LONG SLEEVES AND LONG PANTS are better than sleeveless or so not to draw attention to the body but rather than the face.
If you are still not sure, call or email me. I am here to help you in all ways. Most often if you have light skin and light hair, complimentary colors are light blues and dark blues, lilac and plum, maroons, light greens and dark greens (red is powerful so be careful). Browns and warm colors are excellent with light and dark brown hair. With jet black hair, think winter colors with brilliancy.

Choosing The Photo and Touch ups

Within the day of your appointment, I will either email you thumbnails or post photos on my website and I will email you the instructions for viewing.

After you have chosen the one you want, and decided on some retouching you may also want, you can email me with those requests. I will make simple touch ups and then email you back for your final approval. Retouching is a careful process and it takes time and concentration.
